At a press conference held last week in Tel Aviv, Samsung Imaging unveiled its 2011 line for the Israeli market. After the formal talk was over the MegaPixel team had a chance for some exclusive talk with Samsung Regional product manager discussing Samsung’s views on the photography market and some of its future plans.

Last week we sat down for a talk with Sungrok Kim – Samsung’s regional product manager for Digital Imaging (Middle East & North Africa). We have questioned Mr. Kim on a range of topics starting from the current status of the mirorless market to Samsung’s plans for medium format cameras.

Q: 삼성이 보기에 2011년 미러리스 카메라 시장은 어떻다고 보십니까?
Q: How does Samsung see the 2011 mirorless camera market?
A: 아시다시피 DSLR 시장에는 두 거대 기업이 있습니다 – 케논, 니콘이요. 두 기업은 아직도 컴팩트 시스템 카메라 (예를 들자면 미러리스 카메라 시장) 에 뛰어들기 전에 DSLR 시장의 성공을 이용하려고 하고 있습니다. 소니는 제 예상으론 DSLR 시장에서 큰 이익을 내고 있다고 생각하지 않습니다. 올해, 올림푸스, 파나소닉, 소니, 그리고 펜탁스가 컴팩트 시스템 카메라 새 모델들을 최근 내놓았습니다. 이 컴팩트 시스템 카메라 시장이 성장함에 따라, 내년엔 케논과 니콘이 이 시장에 진입할 것으로 보고 있습니다. 전자기기 제조업체의 선두주자인 삼성은 이 새로운 컴팩트 시스템 카메라 시장은 우리에게 사업을 더욱 확장 할 수 있는 기회입니다.
A: As you know there are two major players in the DSLR market – Canon and Nikon. Both of them are still looking to use their success in that market before they will turn into the compact system camera market (i.e. mirorless camera market). As for Sony – I do not believe that they are very profitable in the DSLR segment. This year we have seen Olympus, Panasonic, Sony and more recently Pentax release new models of compact system cameras. Next year we might see Canon and Nikon enter the market as well as the demand for compact system cameras grows. For Samsung as a leading electronics manufacturer the new compact system camera market is an opportunity for us to expend our business.
Q:일본의 지진으로 인해 삼성 카메라 사업에 영향은 없습니까? 판매나 부품 수급같은 측면에서요?
Q: Did the earthquake in Japan had an any influence on Samsung’s camera business – both in terms of sales and chain of supply?
A: 일본에서 판매에 대해서는 솔직하게 말하자면 그다지 상관이 없습니다. 일본 시장은 매우 패쇄적인 시장입니다. (대부분 일본 기업들에 의해 운영.) 부품수급과 관련해선, 삼성은 자체적으로 디지털 카메라와 장비의 거의 대부분을 자체 수급을 하는 것에 대해 자랑으로 여기고 있습니다. 우리가 일본업체에서 구입하는 부품이 있다 하더라도, 우리는 대체 업체를 가지고 있기 때문에 지진으로 인한 어떠한 수급문제는 없을 것입니다.
A: Regarding sales in Japan – to be honest we do not care much – the Japanese market is a very close market (governed mostly by Japanese manufacturers. I.G.). As for our supply chain – Samsung proud itself for manufacturing almost all of the components for its digital cameras and equipment . Even if there are parts we purchase from other manufacturers we have alternatives so our supply chain did not suffer in any way from the events.
Q: 몇 주전 삼성의 웹싸이트에 대형의 정방형 센서를 가진 카메라가 보였었는데, 그 카메라에 대해 해주실 말씀은 없습니까?
Q: A few weeks ago an image appeared on Samsung’s website depicting what appears to be a camera with a large square sensor. What can you tell us about that?
A: 우리는 중판 카메라 개발에 필요한 기술은 가지고 있습니다만, 이 시장은 우리에 적합치 않기 때문에 이 시장으로 진입하지는 않을 것입니다. 삼성은 대형의 시장에 주력하는 기업입니다. 라이카나 핫셀블라드 같은 틈새시장을 공략하는 기업은 아닙니다. 사진에서 보셨던 카메라는 내부적으로 미래 기술을 가늠키 위해 개발된 것입니다. 현 싯점에선 이 제품을 출시할 계획은 없습니다. 우리는 그러한 개발이 렌즈에서도 있었는데, 예를 들자면 우리는 1000mm의 렌즈를 천문용으로 개발하기도 했습니다. 그러나, 이 또한 단지 내부적으로 있었던 일입니다.
A: We have the technology to develop a medium format cameras but we are not going to do that because this is not our market. Samsung is a manufacturer that focuses on a broad market – we are not a niche manufacturer like Hasselbald or Lieca. What you see in the image was developed for internal purposes in order to look into future technologies. At this point we have no plans to release it to the public. We have done similar things with lenses – for example we developed a 1000mm lens for astronomical use – but again just for internal purposes.

Q: 삼성은 어느 싯점에서 마이크로 포서즈 그룹에 참여할 것을 고려한 적이 있습니까?
Q: Did you consider joining the Micro 4/3 group at any point?
A: 아니요. 우리는 APS-C 판형의 센서를 이용하며, 이는 좀 더 작은 규격인 마포에 비해 장점입니다.
A: No. We use a APS-C size sensor which gives us an advantage over the smaller micro 4/3 sensor.
Q: 삼성은 렌즈 라인업에 대해 상당히 개방적이고, 삼성이 새로운 85mm f/1.4를 올해 출시할 것이라고 했는데, 다른 계획은요?
Q: Samsung has been very open about its lens lineup and has already announced it will launch the new 85mm f/1.4 lens this year what else is planed?
A: 렌즈에 관한한, 말씀하셨다시피, 삼성은 올해 85mm f/1.4, 60mm f/2.8 매크로 렌즈, 18-200mm 렌즈, 그리고 16-80mm f/3.5-4.5를 출시할 것입니다. (역주: 16팬을 어따 팔아먹었어요???) 우리는 또한 현재 AF는 지원하진 않지만, 펜탁스용 새로운 렌즈 어댑터를 개발하고 있습니다.
A: When it comes to lenses, as you mentioned, Samsung will announce this year the new 85mm f/1.4, a 60mm f/2.8 macro lens, 18-200mm lens and 16-80mm f/3.5-4.5. We are also working on an adaptor for Pentax lenses although it currently does not support autofocus. (역주: 혹시 본격적으로 펜탁스유저를 끌어오기 위한 수순??)
Q: 케논 니콘의 렌즈 라인업을 본다면, 현재 50개 이상의 렌즈들을 각각 구비하고 있는데, 보시기에 삼성은 어느정도의 렌즈를 가져야 튼튼한 렌즈 라인업을 갖췄다라고 할 수 있을까요?
Q: If you look at both Canon and Nikon current lineup you see that they have over 50 lenses each – how many lenses do you think Samsung needs for a solid lineup?
A: 좋은 질문이십니다. 이는 어느 고객층을 타겟으로 삼느냐에 따라 달라질 것입니다. 컴팩트 시스템 카메라는 케논/니콘 처럼 전문가용 렌즈를 완비해야하는 전문가 카메라 시장이 아닙니다. 우리는 현재 매년 4-5개의 렌즈를 출시하려고 하고 있습니다. 앞으로 2년 정도면, 15개 정도 쯤의 서로 다른 렌즈들을 가지게 될 것입니다.
A: This is a good question. It really depends on who is your target audience. Compact system cameras are not professional cameras like those manufactured by Canon/Nikon which require a full line of professional lenses to go with them. We are currently working to release 4-5 new lenses each year – in about 2 years time we shall have about 15 different lenses ready for our users.

Q: 준 전문가 카메라는 어떻습니까? (캐논 60D 정도, 니콘 D7000 정도급) (역주: DSLR 중급기 수준의 카메라)
Q: What about semi professional cameras (more or less on the level of the Canon 60D and the Nikon D7000)?
A: 삼성은 현재 두개의 컴팩트 시스템 카마라 라인업을 가지고 있습니다. 전통적인 형태의 NX10/NX11이고 더욱 스타일리쉬한 형태의 NX100 (새모델이 곧 나온다.) 입니다. 삼성은 미래 컴팩트 시스템 카메라 라인업을 위해, 현재 새로운 세대의 APS-C CMOS 센서를 개발중이며, 이는 더욱 높은 화소수를 가질 것입니다. 우리는 두 라인업을 더욱 확장하는 명확한 계획을 가지고 있으며, 더불어 새로운 라인업도 추가할 것입니다. (역주: 예전 바디 라인업에서 보였던 Classic+ 라인업을 지칭하는 것으로 보임)
A: Samsung currently has two lines of compact system cameras – the conventional NX10/NX11 and the more stylish NX100 (which will have a new version soon). Samsung is currently developing a new generation of APS-C CMOS sensors with higher resolution for its future line of compact system cameras. We defiantly have plans to expend both the exiting lines and create new ones.
Q: 삼성은 현재 두개의 컴팩트시스템 스틸 카메라와 비디오 카메라를 가지고 있는데요, 향후 수년 뒤엔 이 두가지 작업을 한 카메라에 통합할 것이라 보시는지요?
Q: Samsung is currently manufacturing both compact system still cameras and dedicated video cameras – do you think that in a few years we will only have one type of camera for both tasks?
A: 이는 매우 민감한 질문이군요.. 현재 컴팩트 시스템 카메라를 본다면, 이미 훌륭한 비디오 촬영기능을 가지고 있습니다. 거기에 더해 실제 캠코더에 비해 몇몇 장점을 가지고 있습니다. 큰 센서를 가지고 렌즈를 교환할 수 있습니다. 반면 컴팩트 시스템 카메라는 색과 넓은 DR을 가지는 스틸이미지에 더 촛점을 두고 제작이 되었죠. 비디오 카메라는 반면 더욱 빠른 동작을 촬영할 수 있도록 설계되었습니다. 그러나, 제 생각으론 당신의 말이 맞습니다. 궁극적으로 이 두 제품은 하나의 제품이 될 것입니다.
A: This is a sensitive question. If you look at compact system cameras today, they already have very good video quality. They actually have several advantages over most dedicated video cameras – they can change the lens and have bigger sensors. On the other hand the sensor in compact system cameras is designed for stills with emphasis on colors and dynamic range. Video camera sensors on the other hand are designed to capture fast movement. However I do think that you are correct and there will eventually be only one type of product.

————————– 이하 컴팩트 카메라 질답… 하략 ————————————-
소식 감상 =====================================================================
1. 내년 컴팩트 시스템 카메라 시장은 캐논 니콘의 가세로 본격적으로 불타오를 것이다.
아시다시피, 전체 카메라시장에서 수량으로나 금액적으로 성장하는 부분은 컴팩트 시스템 카메라 입니다. DSLR은 답보상태로 이익률이 저하되고 있고, 컴팩트 카메라시장은 이미 레드 오션입니다.
올해 나온 올림, 파나, 소니의 미러리스 카메라는 이미 그 전의 단점을 많이 상쇄하고 향상된 기능을 탑체하면서, 라인업이 더욱 굳건해지고 있습니다. 거기에 삼성 NX는 9월 NX200으로 출사표를 던절 것으로 보여집니다.
제 개인적인 추측입니다만, 내년이면 미러리스카메라가 본격 DSLR시장과 정면충돌도 예상이 됩니다. 물론 DSLR 시장이 잠식될 것입니다.
2. 삼성발 차세대 센서가 대기 중이다.
현재 NX200의 센서는 루머로 봤을 때 18MP이 될 것으로 점쳐지고 있습니다. 화소는 더욱 올라갈 것이고, 고 ISO 성능, DR, 동영상 젤로만 잡는다면, 일거에 NX의 최대 약점이 해소될 것입니다.
더불어 기기 성능을 더 끌어 올린다면, 내년 DSLR과의 한판도 해볼만 할 것 입니다.
3. 현재론 중판 카메라 시장 진출은 고려치 않고 있다.
4. 광학의 삼성!!! – 1000mm도 시제작 경험을 가지고 있다…
5. 새로운 펜탁스 마운트 어댑터가 작업 중에 있다.
흠… 이부분은 삼성이 새 마운트로 조리개 조절을 해준다면… 더 나아가 AF까지 할 수 있게 한다면, 펜탁스 유저들 까지도 흡수가 가능하지 않을까 싶습니다. 어차피 AF는 바디에서 콘트라스트 AF를 잡고, 어댑터에 모터를 연결 렌즈 구동만 시켜준다면 특별히 마운트 라이센스를 받지 않아도 제작이 가능할지 싶은데…
NX초기 너무 과도하게 k-마운트를 지원했다간, 인지도가 낮았던 NX렌즈 판매에도 영향이 있을 수 있었으므로 시도하기 어려웠겠지만, 지금은 오히려 K-마운트 유저를 NX로 유도할 수 있을 정도의 수준에 도달하지 않았나 싶습니다. 올해 85.4를 비롯한 4-5개의 렌즈를 갖춘다면, 당당하게 타 마운트 유저들의 흡수도 노려볼 수 있을 듯 싶습니다.
6. 과연 NX-CAM은 언제????
이제 시기적으로 무르익어가고 있습니다. 작년 루머에는 올해 NX-CAM이 소니 파나와 함께 나올 것이라는 말이 있었는데… 시기적으로 렌즈가 많지 않아 이른 면이 있었을 것입니다. 올해 NX200이 신센서를 달고 나오게 되면, 센서, 동영상 렌즈등의 기반이 갖춰져, 내년 정도에는 충분히 NX-CAM의 시장 진출도 예측해 볼 수 있을 것 같습니다.
