니콘 DSLR 신봉자(?)로 알고 있는 탐 호건이 파나 GF1, 올림 E-PL1, 삼성 NX100, 소니 NEX-5를 비교했습니다.
내용이 워낙 많기도 하지만, 거의 잘 알고 있는 내용들이라 본문 번역은 생략토록하고, 결론 부분, 요약 부분만 번역하겠습니다. 그냥 심심풀이로 보세요. ^^

자, 이제 몇몇 질문에 대해 답을 해보도록 하겠다.

이 (미러리스) 카메라들은 하이엔드 똑딱이보다 이미지 품질이 좋은가? 그렇다.
Are these cameras better in image quality than the high-end compacts? Yes.
이 (미러리스) 카메라들의 이미지 품질이 보급형 DSLR만큼 좋은가? 그렇다. 마포의 경우 다이나믹 레인지가 좀 떨어지는 것같은 사소한 점을 빼고는 말이다.
Are these cameras as good as a low-end DSLR in image quality? Yes, with some minor quibbles with the m4/3 models, which are lagging slightly in dynamic range.

Could you abandon your DSLR for one of these? Maybe. There are things you give up and things you gain. But if you’re asking in terms of image quality and lens quality, then the answer is a little split, but probably yes. The m4/3 cameras are challenged above ISO 800, the NX and NEX systems are challenged by lack of lenses right now.

Is autofocus performance good DSLR-like? No. None of these cameras are great at continuous autofocus tracking, though they’re at least as good as any compact camera, if not better. Some of it will depend upon lens. I found most of them are faster with the simpler primes, and some lenses to be faster at focusing than others. I think we’re one generation away from getting really good (but still not phase detect level) focusing.

Can I use my current lenses on them? Yes, but on the m4/3 bodies you probably won’t want to unless they’re 4/3 lenses (due to the 2x crop factor), and on all of them you won’t want to unless you like manual focusing.
똑딱이 대신 사용할 것인가? 그렇다. 그렇지만 명심해야 될 것이, 심지어 가장 작은 팬케익 렌즈를 끼우더라도, 이 중 어떤 것도 셔츠 주머니 속에 들어갈 만큼 작지는 않다는 것이다.
Should you consider one instead of a compact? Yes, but note that you won’t be shirt-pocketing any of these, even with their smallest pancake prime lens.

Are they worth the money? Probably. I picked up the E-PL1 during a big sale for US$399 (with lens!) from Best Buy (!), and at that price it’s a bargain. I wouldn’t pay more than a low-end DSLR for one, though, unless you absolutely can put a price on smaller size and weight.
개인적으로 먹는 걱정은 이제 좀 덜었기 때문에, 오늘까지 1년 여의 기간동안, 마포 바디와 광각 렌즈로 촬영을 해왔고, 그 결과에 상당히 만족을 한다. DSLR을 들고 나가고 싶지 않은 때는, 가벼운 DSLR을 대신해 들고 나갔었다. 그냥 스냅 촬영을 하고 싶을 때는, 마치 커다란 똑딱이처럼 촬영을 했었다.
Personally, I put my money where my mouth is long ago: I’ve been shooting with the m4/3 bodies and a wide assortment of m4/3 lenses for over a year now, and am quite pleased with the results. They substitute for a light DSLR on days when I don’t want to carry a DSLR, they work as “big compacts” for when I want to do simple quick-and-dirty shooting.

So, the winners and losers, in my (current) order of preference:
나는 진정으로 파나소닉 GF-1을 추천한다. 내가 최선의 선택으로 꼽은 이유는 조작성과 폭넓은 렌즈의 선택 때문이다. 고려해야할 두가지 단점이라면, 바디 손떨방이 아니라는 것이고 (많은 파나 렌즈가 손떨방을 가지고 있긴 하지만…), 고 ISO 성능의 제약 때문이다. 마포 카메라는 요즘 몇몇 APS 카메라가 가지는 극강의 ISO 수준에는 도달하지 못할 것이다. 그렇지만, 이미 마포마운트엔 충분한 수의 밝은 렌즈들이 있기 때문에, 생각하는 것 만큼 고감도 성능이 크게 다가오진 않을 것이다.
I can wholeheartedly recommend the Panasonic GF-1. It’s the top choice due to its handling and wide assortment of lens choices. Two minor drawbacks to consider: no sensor-based stabilization (many of the Panasonic lenses have stabilization, though), and limited high ISO capability. The m4/3 cameras aren’t going to reach the stratosphere of ISO like some APS cameras are starting to. On the flip side, there are plenty of fast lenses for the m4/3 mount already, so it’s not as big a limitation as you might think.
올림 E-PL1도 추천을 한다… 만약에… 만약에… 그 디스플레이와 오조작등이 문제가 되지 않는 다면 말이다. 황당하게도, 이 오조작문제만 없었더라면, E-PL1이 내가 가장 선호하는 카메라가 되었을 것이다. 디스플레이는 별 상관하지 않는다. 하지만, 수동 포커싱을 할 요량이라면, 신경쓰이는 부분이 될 수도 있다.
I can recommend the Olympus E-PL1 if (and it’s a big if) you can live with the screen and the accidental settings problem. It’s a shame, because without the accidental settings problem it might be my favorite. I don’t mind the screen, but you might, especially if you’re going to do any manual focus work.
삼성 NX100도 추천을 한다. 그렇지만, 현재 가용한 렌즈를 만족하거나, 삼성이 약속한 렌즈가 시장에 풀릴 때까지 기다릴 수만 있다면 말이다. 카메라 자체로 본다면, 조작성과 이미지 품질면에서 상당한 경쟁력을 가지고 있다. 하지만, 현재 렌즈군은 제약이 심하다, 특히 광각에서 말이다.
I can also recommend the Samsung NX100, but only if you can get by with the available lenses or can wait for those that have been promised. The camera itself is quite competent in handling and image quality, but current lens choice is highly limited, especially at the wide end.
소니 NEX-5는 대놓고 추천하기가 그렇다. 이미지 품질은 실제로 상당히 좋고, 특히 고감도가 필요하다면 더더욱 그렇다. 16mm f/2.8과 함께라면 들고다니기 좋은 소형의 카메라가 된다. 소니의 문제는 세가지다. 첫째는 삼성과 같이, 렌즈가 부족하다는 것이고, 두번째는 몇몇 렌즈들이 카메라 바디에 비해 엄청나게 크기 때문에, 소형화라는 측면에서 사용자들을 꺼리게 만든다는 것이다. 마지막으로 표준에 맞지 않는 사용자 환경과 단순화시킨 조작성 때문에 경우에 따라서 사용자를 곤혹스럽게 만들거나, 아니면 그마저도 좋아지도록 배우는 수밖에 없다. 그러니까, 매장에서 직접 만저보고 사용해 보기전엔 구입하지 마라.
I can’t really recommend the Sony NEX-5 directly. It’s actually quite good in image quality, especially if you need higher ISO values, and the 16mm f/2.8 lens makes for a very compact wide angle walk around camera. Sony’s problem is three-fold. First, like Samsung, the lenses just aren’t there yet. Second, many of the lenses just absolutely dwarf the camera body, and that starts to make the camera less desirable as a “compact.” Finally, the non-standard user interface and simplified control system is either going to get you swearing at the camera or you’re going to learn to like it. But I can’t predict that last bit, so don’t buy the Sony without actually trying it at a store first.
결론적으로, 이 급의 카메라에 관심이 있다면, 파나소닉을 사라. 올림푸스와 삼성도 고려해보되, 기기의 약점에 대해 숙지해두는 것이 좋다. 소니는 구입하기 전에, 많은 부분에서 꼼꼼히 따져봐야한다. 모든 카메라는 충분히 좋은 이미지 품질을 가지고 있다. 이는 보금형 DSLR에 가깝거나 또는 동일한 이미지 품질을 가지고 있다.
So, buy the Panasonic if this class of camera interests you. Consider the Olympus and Samsung, but look closely at their weaknesses before springing for them. The Sony will require a lot of scrutiny on your part before you should choose it. Every camera in this test will give you good image quality. Close to or equal to what you’d get from low-end DSLRs.
